“PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results. PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. We have always taken a pragmatic approach to help improve search quality and create useful products, and our technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page’s importance.” - Google

What does Google mean?

A hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support. The PageRank metric partially depends on all pages that link to it (“incoming links”). A page that is linked to by many pages (Link Juice) with high PageRank receives a high rank itself. If there are no links to a web page there is no support for that page. PageRank is a numeric weighting from 0-10. It is known that other factors contribute to PageRank, e.g. relevance of search words on the page, actual visits to the page, site structure, etc.

So what is Link Building? Link building is gaining incoming links from another site to your site. In a simplified way, to search engines each links acts like a vote or thumbs up for your site. Out there in the vastness of internet, someone or some site thinks your content is valuable enough to their readers or followers to share the page by linking to it. In general, the more incoming links to a page, the better that page will rank in search engines results.

Linking is Natural

From an SEO prospective every publisher has one goal for it content – get it to rank higher in search engines. One of the parts of a pages success in search results in based on links to a given page.

Search engines see this as a simple matter of community policing. Link building is a natural thing. If content is good, people will link to in naturally. It cannot be forced or exchanged.  Search engines are smart enough to know they if links are exchanges making them less valuable on not of any value. The links they are looking for are naturally occurring link patterns.

So how do we try to create naturally occurring link patters? Simple create good content that people will want to link to.

Links should be to a given piece of contents, not the home page of a site. Why? While a site has an overall rank, each page on a site has a given rank also. Most users coming from search engines are hitting the individual pages of a site (the pieces of content).

If you are planning on sending part of or your whole manuscript out with your query letter, make sure your manuscript is in perfect condition before sending it out. One of the things that may turn off agents, editors or publishing houses is mistake in the first few pages. It will may stop them reading right in their tracks.

The longer the piece the more time you will probably send editing it. A novel will need more time on the editing process.

Some agents will request synopsis of longer pieces beforing even requesting a manuscript. Also, always check with agency to see how they perfer receiving materials.
